Did you know a goal of the Beaverhead County Resource Use Committee (BCRUC) is to support the development and revision of Beaverhead County Comprehensive Plan; to include all resources upon which county customs, cultures, and economy are dependent; provide county government with a tool that will enable the county to effectively influence government and non-government entities when making decisions that affect environment, customs, cultures, and economy of the people of Beaverhead County?

10/22/2001 Entry: "Support Needed for 319 TMDL Beaverhead River Planning Grant"

I am requesting support letters for a 319 grant being submitted to Montana Department of Environmental Quality on behalf of the Beaverhead Watershed. Below is a description of the grant and the address for the letters. Please cc a copy of your letter to me for the committee's records. If you or your organization is (or even hope to be) contributing in - kind contributions or matching funds, please mention it. Letters must be received by DEQ by October 31st.

Thanks in advance!

Lorie Higgins, BWC Coordinator

Project Goals

1. Build on current TMDL planning efforts by continuing and expanding research and monitoring program.
2. Demonstrate the multiple benefits of riparian health by reestablishing ground cover that will improve riparian habitat condition and function and reduce sedimentation in the Beaverhead River.
3. Plan information and education activities to enhance awareness and stewardship of watershed resources by all residents in the watershed, and prepare for impacts and attention on the watershed due to the Lewis & Clark bicentennial while coordinating efforts with upstream and downstream watershed planning efforts and other public entities.
4. Augment current watershed plan to document TMDL completion, progress made, and future goals. Digitize data from existing and ongoing studies into a comprehensive database for the watershed. Data will also be submitted to DEQ’s STORET system in consultation with DEQ.

The centerpiece of the project (where most of the money is going) is the riparian vegetation project. The committee is emphasizing this because there are known sites that are eroding due to bare ground, etc., and to complement its weed project. If streambanks have healthy vegetation, they make poor hosts for noxious weeds.

IMPORTANT: in your letters, emphasize the sediment reducing, temperature lowering results of improved riparian habitat rather than the weed connection. The comments received back from DEQ on the first draft suggest they see the word "weed" and think "they can get funding for this elsewhere." Weird, but seems to be the case.
